It can also be used to produce Short Mead out of Honeydew and Liquid Honey.
Fermentation Items such as Fertilizer, Mulch or Compost are required as catalysts. Each item has different properties.
Any liquids produced by this machine can be canned, bottled or extracted via Buildcraft Waterproof Pipes.
The Fermenter's GUI is divided into seven areas:
I - Liquids Input Slot
You can manually place liquid Cans, Capsules, Buckets, etc. in here in order to fill the Liquid Tank (II).
II - Liquid Tank
This tank will hold the source liquids, such as Water, Honey or Apple Juice.
III - Organic Item Slot
Fermentable resources such as Saplings can be placed in here.
IV - Fermentation Item Slot
For the fermentation process, you need a fuel to power it. Fertilizer, Mulch or Compost can be placed in this slot and will act as fuel.
V - Output Tank
The resulting Biomass or Short Mead will be stored in this tank.
VI - Can Slot
You can place Cans, Bottles, Buckets, etc. in this slot for them to be filled. Filled cans go to VII.
VII - Can Output Slot
Filled cans are placed in here. They can be either removed manually or through Pipes.
The Fermenter requires Redstone Flux Energy (RF) in order to work. You can supply it by connecting any RF power source.
The more power that is supplied to the Fermenter, the faster it'll operate.
Biomass Production Mechanics
The amount of Biomass that the Fermenter produces depends on the resources that are supplied.
Fermentation Items (IV)

The Work Cycles is the amount of time that the Fuel will burn. This means that Compost and Mulch will ferment for a longer amount of time than Fertilizer.
Organic Items (III)
The amount of Biomass produced by the Fermenter depends on the source Sapling's “Sappiness” genetic trait (since 2.1.x.x for Minecraft 1.5). The values are below:

Source Liquids (II)
The amount of Biomass that is produced is calculated through the following formula:
Biomass Amount = Liquid Consumption * Output Modifier
For example, if Water is the used liquid and Compost is used as the fermentation item, you have:
Compost's Liquid Consumption = 12000 mB Water's Output Modifier = 1.0 Therefore, Biomass Amount = 12000 * 1.0 = 12000 mB (12 Buckets).
Short Mead Production
Short Mead can also be produced in a Fermenter.
To make Short Mead, you will need:
- Liquid Honey (Output Modifier = 1.0);
- Honeydew (Output/Item = 500 mB);
- Any Fermenter Item shown above.
- 4 x Bronze Gear
- 4 x Glass
- 1 x Sturdy Casing
- 1 x Fermenter
Feed saplings in through the top of the Fermenter and fertilizer in through the bottom.
