Ores

Forestry adds three ores to the terrain generation: Copper, Tin and Apatite.
Each ore has different uses, from Fertilizer to machines.

Apatite

Apatite is a phosphate mineral that is commonly used in Fertilizer.

It occurs in large, but uncommon veins in layers above level 561), and when mined with a Pickaxe, it drops between 1 and 42) Apatite (gems), which can then be used for making Fertilizer.

Fortune can be used to increase drop rates, and Silk Touch can also be used to obtain the block instead of the gem (this can be useful for storage purposes, although Apatite Ore blocks cannot be smelted).

Apatite Ore

Copper

Copper is a mineral that is commonly used in making Bronze, which is then used for tools and machines.

It occurs on layers above level 32, and when mined, it drops a block of Copper Ore.

Copper Ore can then be smelted in a Furnace for 1 Copper Ingot, or it can also be processed with several machines from other mods, such as IndustrialCraft²'s Macerator.

Copper Ore

Tin

Tin is a mineral that is commonly used in making Bronze, tools and Cans.

It occurs on layers above level 16, and when mined, it drops a block of Tin Ore.

Tin Ore can then be smelted in a Furnace for 1 Tin Ingot, or it can also be processed with several machines from other mods, such as IndustrialCraft²'s Macerator.

Configuring Ore Generation

If you already have other mods that add the same ores that Forestry has, or for any other reason, you can disable their generation.

To do so, you will need to edit the following file with a text editor (such as Notepad++ or gedit):

<minecraft_installation_dir>/config/forestry/common.conf

Then, scroll down until you find this:
